Ice needles pierced the air that night, sailing through the darkness, battering the windshield by the thousands. The car crawled along the highway and the wipers moved as one. She hadn’t gotten around to putting the winter tires on. She knew where they were—stacked under a tarp in a corner of the garage—but there was no one she could ask for help. And anyway, winter would be over soon enough.

Sitting hurt, and she was shaking, more out of anger than anything else. Gripping the wheel as she drove, she couldn’t stop thinking about Therese. That stupid pink velour outfit of hers, how she turned away from her. She was annoyed by how disappointed she was in her friend.

She had all the information she needed. Right or wrong didn’t matter. She was powerless, and the powerless can’t call in what they are owed.

That wasn’t news.

She should have known it wasn’t worth trying.

The black ice on the road twinkled in the headlights, and the oncoming traffic, all shining beams and wide bright lines, sliced through the dark. Cars kept overtaking her. Each time someone leaned on their horn, she flinched, even though she knew full well that she was driving too slowly.

Dream was crying in the backseat.

She should have sat her up front, next to her.

She exited the highway, pulled onto the shoulder, ran to the other side of the car, unfastened the car seat, and moved it. Then she drove, keeping one hand on Dream. Her pacifier kept falling out of her mouth as she screamed, and each time, she popped it back in. Eventually, the pacifier dropped to the floor, and when she tried to catch hold of it by wedging her hand between the gear shift and the seat, she only managed to flick it farther out of reach.

She tried to keep her eyes on the road and to tune out Dream’s snuffles and howls. It was hot in the car. Dream’s cries waned and her breathing evened out. At the next exit, she was asleep.
